An open letter to all the new, returning, and
potential pilots:
We at Wings Over Ohio R/C Club are striving to make the next twenty-one years at Shelby
as fun and enjoyable as was the first! Please come join all of us if you love to fly R/C
as we do or if you would like to learn more about the sport. We had Dennis McKay as our
AMA Intro Pilot and instructor. He was available on site to give you and your kids a
"hands on" opportunity to try out this fascinating hobby. Dennis has agreed to
again be the AMA Intro Pilot. We are proud to announce Terry Kennedy will also be working
with Dennis as an Intro Pilot this year. Thanks to Terry for his wonderful work with the
Rally. His wife Bea will act as our official photographer this year too. We will have
George Meyers working as our Videographer and photographer this year. We had a "Park
Flyer", R/C Boat and R/C Car area setup for anyone to get a real radio control
demo. There was lots of room on the pond for boat races and there were monster truck demos
too! We have again been approved by the Superintendent of the Shelby school district to
allow our flyers to be hand carried home by each student in the district (over 3000
students). Talk about reaching our "target audience"! The attendance was
overwhelming! We had over 3500 in attendance over the weekend. You can again be assured of
a large audience to watch your flying skills. You will certainly be able to show off your
finest aircraft too. We even had a couple that loved it so much they got a room in town to
spend the night so they could attend on Sunday as well. A lot of kids had a whole lot of
fun right along with the adults. We want the returning pilots to have more fun now than
ever before by allowing even more open flying time and a chance to really show off their
piloting skills to the spectators young and old alike. By demonstrating your skills and
enjoyment of the R/C Sport we hope to attract even more newcomers to this fascinating
hobby.
All of our contacts have proven to be very receptive and excited about the new concept.
Shelby will have our volunteers from the Ashland Cloud Chasers an AMA chartered club and members of
other local clubs to help make this a fun and enjoyable Fathers Day Weekend of R/C flying
for all. We promise more open flying this year. Friday June
16th from noon till 8:00 P.M. is by invitation only to Registered Pilots, Manufacturers
& Vendors Reps and the Shelby Crew. This includes the FREE Big
Friday night Mexican Food Shin-Dig Get Together at 6:00 P.M. hosted by my wife Jan and
myself. Jan will be making her famous Southwest dishes. YUMMY! We are still getting
comments from last year on the food. This is going to be a regular benefit of attending
Shelby from now on!
Thanks to Jan for her wonderful cooking skills!
Please e-mail us if you would like us to send you or your club copies of the flyer or to
receive more information. rcpilots@shelbyairrally.org
If you would like to participate in the event this year just email us with a brief
description of your piloting skills and your aircraft type, size, and class. You can
pre-register by clicking that link above. We are looking for 3D & Freestyle pilots as
well as Helicopters, Warbirds, Jets, & Rockets for the show demonstrations! We can be
reached by telephone at 419-668-8845 between the hours of 10:00 A.M till 7:00 P.M eastern
time
We had a lot of the regulars attending the New Shelby that have flown at Shelby for the
last twenty years or so. We had a lot of new pilots too! We are working to make this the
largest R/C Aircraft flying event in Mid-Ohio. Our crew from Wings Over Ohio R/C Club are
going to be at the 52nd annual Toledo Show to meet
with sponsored pilots, manufacturers, vendors, and the R/C Clubs in attendance to promote
Shelby. We also attend the TNT
Electric TOC on Friday and The TNT E-X Games on Saturday
night. If you would like to contact us please do so by email or phone. We will be more
than happy to talk with you. A lot of new concepts are in place for the new Shelby. We
opened it up to all sizes and classes of aircraft last year and the response was great.
Even the Park Flyers have their own area to fly! No longer will it
be limited to just 1/4 Scale or larger airplanes. Heli & Jet pilots are also invited
to attend. Thanks Nick and Gary for your expert Jet Program! All events will be
scheduled and programmed for a safe and fun demo of your piloting skills. WE WANT KIDS! So come on Kid's bring your Dad, Granddads (and
anyone else that wants to come along), for a REALLY FUN Aviation weekend!
We are pleased to have the Air Explorer Troop 117 from Bucyrus
Ohio join us again this year. They along with Jim Robinson
and Boy Scout Troop 107 did the parking and policing duties last year. Their
expertise in controlling the parking traffic and keeping the grounds clean is one of the
biggest jobs. They will be participating in the flying and training this year. Thanks to
Andy for his help last year with being the Events Official Announcer! Jim and his Boy
Scouts Troop will be doing the parking duties this year.
Special Thanks goes out to the sponsors,
manufacturers, vendors, and distributors who are helping to promote our event by giving
their generous promotional consideration.
